"Life is out there, go and get it” – Jonathan’s story
Jonathan joined Better Working Futures during a challenging time. He was in the process of integrating himself back into the community following prison release and had also been recently diagnosed with an impacting health issue.
During his initial appointment, he met with Health Professional, Afiya, who took the time to get to know Jonathan’s personal circumstances and the barriers he faced. Jonathan’s health condition caused severe muscle weakness, which created personal challenges in his day-to-day life. Together, they discussed his mental health from both his time in prison and since reintegrating back into society.
Afiya shared: “Jonathan didn’t feel the need for an external referral; however, I was able to support him by addressing his concerns and offering a safe space for him to work through his emotions and build a stronger mindset. His job goal was to find a stability in a job, to regain a sense of normality and self-worth.
“Together, we worked on his self-confidence, focusing on strengths rather than past setbacks, which helped him to realise his ability to contribute meaningfully and successfully sustain employment.”

“Since attending the Health and Wellbeing Hub, I have managed to address situations that I would never have talked about before. I found the group sessions incredibly valuable, as they helped me build confidence in myself, which has made a positive impact on my everyday life.” said Jonathan.
“One of the most rewarding aspects of the programme was the friendships I’ve made. It was through these connections that I realised I wasn’t alone, and the group therapy provided a safe and supportive environment where I could access thoughts and feelings that had been locked away or even unknown to me before. Being able to share and listen to others going through similar experiences brought a sense of relief and understanding.”
“As a result of the encouragement and support I received, I was able to secure part-time work, something that I wouldn’t have thought possible before joining the Hub. This journey has truly been life-changing, and I am so grateful for the guidance, care, and community that has made all the difference. I now feel more confident in taking on new challenges and moving forward with a renewed sense of purpose. Life is out there, go and get it!”
